THE ROOM WAS DIM WHEN Edie woke, and for a second, she was confused as to where she was. Then she smelled the familiar talc.

She was in Blue Ridge, in Nanny’s room.

Raised voices somewhere in the house drew her from the bed. With shaking hands, she flicked on a light and checked the time. Just after six. She’d slept the afternoon away.

As the sun cast an orangey glow over the early evening sky, Edie’s stomach rumbled, and she pulled on jeans and a shirt, then headed in the direction of the commotion.

Katherine and Holly were going at it in the kitchen. Katherine was experimenting with coffee, and Holly was making almond tea cakes. Despite the size of the room, it was nowhere near big enough for both of them to be creative.

Edie poured herself a glass of wine and sat at the table. Katherine was actually standing her ground for once, and Edie was curious to see where it would go. She sipped the wine, then screwed up her face at the metallic taste. It tasted strange, yet she’d shared many bottles of that particular year with Xavier.

Holly was telling Katherine there was no importance in a cup of coffee and the hideous machine she’d bought took up too much room. Katherine was trying to suggest alternatives instead of just telling Holly to put the fuck up with it.

Edie took another mouthful of wine. Bitter. Definitely metallic.

Katherine started yelling, and Edie put down her glass, stunned at the darkness in Katherine’s tone. She never yelled. Edie couldn’t ever remember hearing her raise her voice. Now she was screeching about how she was sick of always having to give in, to blend in, to suck it up. Her face was a heavy shade of puce, and her hands were fisted at her side. She looked more alive than Edie had ever seen her.

A cup smashed. One of Nanny’s favourites, scattered across the floor. It happened so quickly, Edie wasn’t sure if it was thrown or dropped. Silence followed as they looked at the pieces, and all Edie could think about was how disappointed Nanny would be.

She took another sip of wine, frowned, and pushed the glass away.

While Katherine and Holly bickered over who should clean up the broken cup, Edie stared at the wine. Something was wrong.

I feel wrong.

She counted back, days becoming weeks. Butterflies started to flutter in her stomach. She stood and knocked the glass over, watched as wine splashed onto the polished floor.

Katherine and Holly stopped arguing and stared at her.

‘Are you okay?’ Katherine asked.

Edie ran a hand through her hair. ‘Me. Of course. Why wouldn’t I be?’

‘You’ve gone white, like you’re going to faint.’

Edie shrugged. ‘I’m fine.’

Katherine considered her a moment longer. ‘In that case, isn’t it your turn to cook?’

‘If it’s her turn to cook, then I’m cooking,’ Holly said.

Edie shrugged as a knot formed in her stomach, choking the butterflies.
